Painted portrait of Henry James

Henry James is considered among the greatest of English novelists and was nominated for the Nobel literature prize three times. He was born into a wealthy American family. As a child he travelled with them frequently to England, where he finally settled as an adult. He briefly attended Harvard Law School but preferred literature.

At age 21 he wrote his first novel and went on to write 23 in all, often describing romantic entanglements and the inner lives of aristocrats. James’ fiction is sometimes considered difficult and highly cultured, more appropriate to classroom study than to popular consumption. However, public appreciation has been fostered through over 150 screen and TV adaptations, particularly since the sixties. In this workshop we will read a few of these novels, view the film adaptations online, and explore the continued appeal of his work to the screen.

Facilitators

Laura Hill retired in 2006 and joined the Academy soon after, with the luxury of time to explore new avenues of study, and make new social connections. A lengthy career in the school system as a psychological consultant, followed by 20 years in real estate led to the best career of all – rekindling life as a bookworm, a painter, and a traveler. It is a pleasure to assist Rhona in facilitating a study of Henry James’ esteamed body of work in the company of like-minded colleagues.

Rhona Wolpert has enjoyed being an Academy member since 2006, in particular the intellectual stimulation and social interaction it offers. She has facilitated several Academy workshops. Rhona practiced physiotherapy in three countries before switching to psychoanalytic child psychotherapy in Toronto for 25 years. She loves literature and film and looks forward to learning from participants’ discussion in this workshop.
